Blackout fabric is woven or coated so that light does not pass through it. Whether the room actually goes dark is decided by the fitting, because light comes in around a blackout curtain rather than through it.
So the track runs wider than the glass, the curtains overlap the frame at both sides, and the drop finishes well below the sill. On an east-facing bedroom window that detail is the whole job — it is what decides whether you sleep past sunrise.

Blackout, dimout, and what the labels mean
Not everything sold as blackout blocks all light. A true blackout fabric is either tightly woven in three layers or backed with an acrylic or foam coating, and holding it up to a lamp shows nothing through it. A dimout drops the light heavily but still glows.
The coated fabrics stop the most light and hang stiffer. The woven ones drape better and feel more like an ordinary curtain, which matters if the pair is going in a living room rather than a bedroom.
The third route is a lining: a face fabric you like the look of with a separate blackout lining behind it, so you get the appearance of one and the performance of the other. It also makes the pair heavier, which is why the track fixing gets checked at the same time.

Colour, weight and how it hangs
Blackout fabric performs the same whatever colour it is — the block comes from the weave or the coating, not the shade. What the colour changes is how the room reads in daylight with the curtains open, and how much the folds show. A pale curtain in strong sun shows every crease. A mid tone hides them.
Weight is the part people underestimate. A floor-length blackout pair three metres wide is heavy, and that weight goes straight into whatever the track is fixed to. It is also why fullness is worth settling early: a curtain gathered to twice its track width uses twice the cloth and weighs about twice as much.
Most rooms here run a sheer against the glass with the blackout pair in front of it on a double track, so daytime and night are handled separately.
Blackout curtain styles
Bedrooms, nurseries and rooms with a screen
The obvious case is a bedroom facing east, where the sun arrives before you want it to. A nursery is the same argument with a shorter fuse: a room that has to go dark for a daytime nap has to go properly dark, and a gap over the top of the track is enough to undo it.
The less obvious cases are rooms with a television or a monitor on the wall opposite the glass, and any west-facing room used in the afternoon. Both are glare problems rather than sleep problems, and the same pair of curtains solves them.
Blackout fabric hangs and washes like any other curtain, though a coated one is happier taken down and cleaned than machine-washed at home. Taking curtains down, cleaning them and rehanging them is one of the jobs we are asked for most.
