Cotton is a plain, closely woven fabric that takes colour and print well and washes without much fuss. That's most of why it ends up in bedrooms, children's rooms and kitchens rather than in formal rooms.
We cut and sew it in pure cotton and in cotton blends, plain or printed, lined or unlined. Unlined, a cotton weave filters the light; with a blackout lining behind it, the same fabric will darken a room.

What cotton curtains are good at
Cotton takes a fold and holds it. Next to linen it looks flatter and more even, which is what you want where a curtain should read as part of the room rather than as drapery.
It washes, and that matters more here than in most places. Dust settles on everything, and a curtain that can come down, go through a wash and go back up is a different proposition from one that has to go out for cleaning. Cotton shrinks a little the first time it's washed, so it's worth reading the care label before anything hot goes near it. If a drop comes back shorter than you wanted it, that's an alteration rather than a new pair.
It also prints well. Block prints, stripes and small repeats hold their edges in a tight cotton weave in a way they don't in a loose one, so if you want pattern rather than texture, this is usually the fabric it arrives on.

What the lining is actually for
Unlined cotton on a west-facing window glows by mid-afternoon and lets a fair amount of heat through with the light. A lining puts a second layer between the sun and the room, slows the fading of the face fabric, and gives the curtain enough weight to hang straight instead of lifting in the air-conditioning.
Where a room has to go properly dark, that lining is a blackout one — and the track has to run wider than the glass so the curtains overlap the frame. Light gets in around a blackout curtain far more often than through it.
The ordinary arrangement in a Dubai apartment is two layers: a sheer against the glass for the day, a heavier cotton in front of it for the evening. The sheer catches most of the dust, and a sheer comes down and washes far more easily than a lined pair.
Where cotton curtains usually go in the house
Bedrooms, mostly. A washable fabric next to a bed is worth having, and a cotton with a blackout lining does what a bedroom curtain has to do. Children's rooms for the same reason, and because print survives a cotton weave better than a loose one.
Kitchens, where cotton handles cooking grease and a wash better than silk or a heavy weave — though on a window directly over a hob, a roller blind is usually less trouble than any curtain.
Living rooms, where you want pattern or a flat, tailored drop rather than the looser fall of linen.
Whichever room it is, the curtains are made to the measurements taken at that window — pinch pleat, wave or eyelet heading, on a track or a pole depending on what's above the glass.
