Blackout blinds in Dubai, and what actually makes a room dark
A blackout blind is a coated or densely woven fabric that no light passes through. That part is easy. What decides whether the room goes dark is everything around the fabric — how wide the blind runs, where it's mounted, and how much gap is left at the sides and the head.
Light doesn't come through a blackout cloth. It comes past it. A blind fitted inside a tight reveal has to leave a few millimetres of clearance each side to run at all, and on an east-facing bedroom window at six in the morning you'll see those two lines on the wall.
We measure the opening, say which mounting will actually darken it, and make the blind to those measurements.

Where the light actually gets in
Three places, in order of how much they cost you: down the two sides, over the top around the roller, and under the bottom bar if the drop stops short.
Mounting the blind on the wall face above the opening rather than inside it fixes most of that. Run it wider than the glass so the fabric overlaps the reveal by several centimetres each side, and take the drop past the sill rather than to it. The blind looks slightly larger than the window, and the room gets appreciably darker.
Inside the reveal is the tidier look, and on a window that only needs dimming it's the right call. It's worth knowing which one you're choosing and why, rather than finding out at sunrise.

Sleeping through a Dubai sunrise
The rooms that need this most are east-facing bedrooms and anywhere someone sleeps during the day after a night shift. In both cases the job isn't dimming the room, it's holding the light out at full strength while the sun is directly on the glass.
Privacy runs the other way round. During the day a blackout blind gives you complete privacy simply by being opaque; after dark, with your lights on inside, any gap around the edge works in reverse and shows a lit strip from outside. The same overlap that keeps sunrise out keeps that in.
Blocking the sun off the glass also keeps some of the afternoon heat out of the room, which on west-facing windows here is a real difference rather than a claim.
Blind on its own, or blind and curtain
A blackout roller takes almost no space. It rolls to a small bundle at the head of the window, leaves the reveal clear, and suits kitchens, offices and small bedrooms where a curtain and its stack would be in the way.
Where a room also wants softening, the common arrangement here is a blackout blind against the glass with a sheer or a lighter curtain in front of it. The blind does the dark, the curtain does the look, and the layers cover both daytime glare and night.
There's no showroom to visit and nothing to browse in a store — the fabric range travels to you instead, which is the more useful way round when the thing you're judging is how much light a cloth stops.
Blackout blind styles
Blackout blinds, in short
- Blackout and room-darkening are not the same thing. A room-darkening fabric dims; a blackout fabric passes no light at all.
- The fabric grade matters less than the fit. Width, mounting position and drop decide the result.
- Mounted on the wall face and run wider than the opening, a blind loses far less light at the edges than one squeezed inside the reveal.
- A roller stacks into a small bundle at the head, so it takes less room than a curtain.
- It cuts solar heat as well as light, which shows on west-facing glass in the afternoon.
- Pair it with a sheer or a lighter curtain where the room needs softening as well as darkness.
