A vertical blind is a row of fabric louvres hanging side by side from a headrail: a chain turns them, and a cord draws them to the side.
Ours have 127 mm louvres in sunscreen, dimout, blackout, PVC or sheer fabric, made to the size of your glass, with a weight at each hem and a chain linking the hems.
They suit the widest openings in a Dubai home or office: balcony sliders, villa patio doors and long runs of tower glazing, where a stack of louvres takes less room at the side than a gathered curtain.

What vertical blinds cost in Dubai
Vertical blinds start at AED 80 per m² in sunscreen and AED 110 per m² in blackout. Both prices include the headrail, the cord and chain, the weighted hems and the fitting.
A vertical blind hangs flat, so it is priced on its own area, the width times the drop, with a minimum of 3 m². A 100 × 150 cm blind is 1.5 m², so it is charged at the minimum: AED 240 in sunscreen or AED 330 in blackout. A 200 × 250 cm blind is 5 m², AED 400 or AED 550, and a 400 × 300 cm run of glass is 12 m², AED 960 or AED 1,320.

Vertical blind materials, from sunscreen to blackout
The fabric of the louvres decides what the blind does with the light. Sunscreen and blackout have a fixed price; dimout, PVC and sheer are priced at the visit.
How a vertical blind works
A white headrail runs across the top of the glass. Inside it, a carrier holds each louvre by its top and turns it, and the louvres hang side by side, each 127 mm wide. That is the wider of the two common sizes, the other being 89 mm, so a run of glass takes fewer louvres.
The bead chain turns every louvre at once, from edge-on for the view to closed for privacy. The cord draws them along the headrail to stack at the side. A tensioner or cleat that holds the cord and chain against the wall is fitted on request.
Each louvre has a weight at its hem, and a chain links the hems along the bottom. In a Dubai room the air conditioning keeps the air moving, and louvres without that chain twist and drift apart. With it, they hang in line and turn together.
A valance, a strip that covers the headrail, is available on request. Louvre blinds, vertical window blinds and vertical blind curtains are the same thing under three names.
Where the stack goes
Drawn back, the louvres gather in a stack. Where it stands decides how much of the glass you get back, so it is settled at the measuring visit.
Inside the recess, on the wall or on the ceiling
Where the headrail is fixed decides how much light gets round the blind, and where the stack stands when it is drawn.
Inside the recess
The headrail fits within the window's reveal, and the blind is made a little narrower than the opening so the louvres turn freely. It looks built in, and a thin line of light shows down each side.
On the wall above
The headrail fixes above the glass and the blind is made wider than the opening, so it overlaps the frame on each side. Less light gets round it, and the stack can stand on the wall beside the glass instead of over it.
On the ceiling or a bulkhead
Where the glass runs up to the ceiling, or a gypsum bulkhead sits above it, the headrail fixes to that. In gypsum each fixing has to find the framing behind the board, or the weight of the louvres slowly pulls it loose.
Brackets along a long run
A vertical blind hangs its whole weight from one headrail, so a wide one is held by brackets spaced along it, not only at its ends. Held at two points, a long headrail bows in the middle and the louvres stop turning cleanly.

Motorized vertical blinds, with Dooya

Power at the headrail
The motor is wired, so it needs a power point at the headrail. That is simplest to arrange before a ceiling or a bulkhead is closed up, so raise it at the measuring visit.
Price and warranty
The motor costs extra, on top of the blind. Dooya motors carry a two-year warranty, and the blind keeps its own two years.

Vertical blinds for living rooms, bedrooms and offices
Where a vertical blind earns its place in a Dubai home or office, and the one thing it can't be.
Living rooms and balcony sliders
The living room is where the widest glass usually is, often a sliding door onto a balcony or a garden. Turned edge-on, sunscreen louvres keep the view and take the glare off a screen; drawn back, they clear the door.
Bedrooms
Blackout louvres, fixed on the wall above the glass so they overlap the frame, make a wide bedroom window dim enough to sleep in. For a room that has to go fully dark, blackout curtains do it better.
Offices and clinics
Long runs of office glazing, meeting rooms and consulting rooms, where sunscreen keeps the daylight and the view out while cutting the glare on screens. There is more on dressing a workspace in office blinds and office curtains.
Kitchen-diners
PVC louvres wipe clean, which counts on a sliding door beside a dining table. Fabric louvres gather grease near a hob, so keep them to the dining end.
Children's rooms
Ask for the tensioner or cleat that holds the cord and chain against the wall, and keep a bed or a cot away from the side the chain hangs. A wired Dooya motor removes the cord and chain altogether.
Not in wood
We don't make vertical blinds with timber louvres: a wooden louvre that long is heavy and uncommon. For the look of wood, our wooden blinds are horizontal slats in faux wood.
Where vertical blinds fall short
A vertical blind is the practical answer for wide glass, and it has trade-offs. Better to know them at the window than after it is up:
Dust on every louvre
Dozens of louvres means dozens of edges for dust to settle on, and a room facing a road or a building site shows it fastest. Run a vacuum with a soft brush down them every few weeks, or choose PVC, which wipes clean.
Movement in a draught
Louvres move when the air conditioning blows on them or a door swings past. The chain along the hems keeps them in line, but a vent that blows straight down the glass will still stir them.
Light at the edges
Closed, the louvres overlap, but light still shows down the sides and along the top and bottom. A headrail on the wall above, wider than the glass, cuts most of it; a blackout curtain cuts more.
The stack takes room
Drawn back, the louvres still stand in a stack at the side. Over the glass it keeps some of the view covered; on the wall beside it, it needs wall to stand on. Where it goes is settled at the measuring visit.
Cords and chains
The cord and chain hang at the side of the blind. A tensioner or cleat that holds them against the wall is fitted on request, and in a child's room it is worth asking for.
The office look
In a home, plain white louvres can look like an office. A textured, patterned or coloured fabric reads softer, and if you want folds, a sheer curtain on a track gives the same filtered light.

Are vertical blinds good for sliding doors?
Yes. They draw aside to clear the door, and the stack can stand over the fixed pane or on the wall beside the glass, so the door slides without pushing louvres out of the way. On a door used all day the louvres can catch as you walk through, and a panel blind has fewer pieces to knock out of line.
Do blackout vertical blinds make a room dark?
Dim, not dark. The blackout fabric stops the light through each louvre, and closed, the louvres overlap, but light still shows at the sides and along the top and bottom. Fixed on the wall above the glass and wider than it, a blackout vertical makes a bedroom dim enough to sleep in by day.
Are vertical or roller blinds better?
Neither; they do different jobs. A vertical blind draws sideways and turns its louvres, so it suits wide glass and sliding doors. A roller blind is one piece of fabric that rolls up, so it suits a single window and wipes clean. Our roller blinds page covers the other side.
What are the disadvantages of vertical blinds?
Four that matter. The louvres collect dust, they move when the air conditioning or a passing door stirs them, light shows at the sides even when they are closed, and drawn back they leave a stack at the side of the glass. The chain along the hems of ours keeps the louvres in line, and PVC louvres wipe clean.
Are vertical blinds out of style?
