Custom blinds in Dubai, made to your own measurements

Custom here means one thing, and it's not a longer list of colours: the blind is cut and made to the opening it's going into, rather than bought at the nearest stock width and made to fit.

That matters more in Dubai than in most places. Apartment glazing runs floor to ceiling and much wider than any stock roller; villa reveals are rarely square, so a blind measured at one end leaves a wedge of light at the other; and a lot of windows sit under a gypsum bulkhead that decides where the brackets can go.

Roller, roman, venetian, vertical, wooden and zebra can all be made this way. The type, the fabric and the fitting are three separate decisions, and they get made at the window.

The samples come to you

There's no walk-in counter. The fabrics and slat samples arrive at your home or office on a free measuring visit.

Measured at both ends

Width and drop are taken at each side of the opening, because a reveal that looks square usually isn't.

Made, fitted and altered by us

We make what we fit, so an alteration or a repair later comes back to the people who made it.

What gets decided at the window

Five things, and none of them can be settled from a photograph:

  • Inside or outside the reveal. Inside is tidier; outside runs wider than the glass and loses far less light at the edges.
  • How open the fabric is. A sunscreen weave keeps the view and cuts glare, a dimout softens the room, a blackout stops light altogether.
  • One blind or several. Past a certain width a single blind gets heavy and slow to lift, so a wide run is often better as two or three that align.
  • Which side the control goes. Obvious once it's wrong — a chain on the hinge side of a door is a daily annoyance.
  • Chain or motor. High and unreachable windows are the usual reason for motorized blinds, and the power has to be planned before installation.

The fixing decides the job

A made-to-measure blind is only as good as what it hangs from. Towers here usually have a pocket or a bulkhead above the glass, and a bulkhead is gypsum board — an anchor that only bites the board will hold a light roller for a while and then let go. It has to reach the framing behind it. Concrete takes a different anchor again.

Weight is the other half of it. A wide blackout roller or a set of wooden slats is heavier than people expect, and it's the bracket that pays for that every time the blind is raised.

All of which gets worked out on the measuring visit, with the ceiling still intact, rather than on installation day.

Choosing the fabric at your own window

There's no walk-in counter here, so the sample books travel instead. You hold the weave against your own wall, floor and light, and against whatever is already in the room.

That's the more useful way round. A fabric that looks warm under artificial light often reads grey against a Dubai afternoon, and an openness factor that sounds fine as a number is obvious in two seconds when you hold the cloth up and look through it at the building opposite.

If a window would be better served by a curtain, or by a blind with a sheer in front of it, we'll say so then — before anything is cut.
