A bedroom curtain is a full-length curtain with two jobs: keeping the room dark while you sleep, and private once the lamps are on.

Bedroom curtains, in short

Curtains for a bedroom have to keep the room dark while you sleep and private once the lamps are on.

How dark a bedroom gets depends on the fitting as much as the cloth. The track goes high and runs 15 to 20 cm past the frame on each side, the pair overlaps at the centre, and the hem reaches the floor.
Most bedrooms take a sheer on a second track behind the blackout, for daylight without the building opposite seeing in, and the double track is included in the price.
A sheer on its own keeps a bedroom private by day only, because after dark, with the lamps on, the room shows through it.
A blackout roman blind suits a small bedroom window or a deep recess, where a curtain has no room to stack back.

Which way the bedroom window faces

In Dubai the direction of the glass decides what a bedroom curtain has to do, and at what hour.

East

East and north-east wake you at dawn

In June the sun is up before half past five and rises well to the north of east, so an east or north-east bedroom takes it straight in at dawn. This is the room for blackout, with the track run high and wide so no edge of light gets round it.

West

West stays warm into the evening

From mid-afternoon the low sun lands on west-facing glass, and the room can still be warm at bedtime. A blackout pair drawn through the afternoon keeps that sun off the bed and the floor. For the heat itself, a honeycomb blind on the glass does more than any curtain.

South

South gets low sun in winter

In the cooler months the sun sits low in the south and reaches deep into the room for much of the day. In summer it stands almost overhead at noon and barely comes in. A sheer takes the winter glare off; sleeping in still needs blackout.

North

North has the softest light

Little direct sun, except early and late on summer days, when the sun rises and sets north of east and west. If you sleep only after dark, a north bedroom can manage with a dimout curtain, which cuts most of the light but still glows in the sun. A day sleeper still wants blackout.

By day, the sheer is a screen

Outside is far brighter than the room, so to the apartment across the way a closed sheer looks like a pale, blank screen. You see out through it; nobody sees in.

After dark, the room shows through

With the lamps on, the room is now the brighter side, and the same sheer lets anyone outside see in. That is why a blackout or dimout pair hangs in front on the double track, ready to draw in the evening.

Sheer and blackout on one double track

Most bedrooms here end up with two curtains, a sheer on the track nearest the glass and the blackout pair on the track in front of it. By day the blackout stacks back at the sides and the sheer stays drawn; at night, or for an afternoon sleep, the blackout closes over it.

Both hang from one double track, included in the price, and in a tower it usually fixes up inside the curtain pocket above the window. For two layers the pocket needs to be 10 to 15 cm deep for pinch pleat, or 20 to 25 cm for a wave heading, which is measured at the visit.

The heading that keeps light out at the top

Most bedroom curtain ideas start with the colour. In a bedroom the heading, how the top of the curtain is made and hung, matters more, because it decides whether daylight gets in over the top.

Wave on a ceiling track

One continuous curve, on a track fixed to the ceiling or up inside the pocket. Nothing shows above it, so it is the darkest of the three, and drawn back it stacks into about 18 to 25 cm for each metre of track.

Sewn groups of pleats, the more formal look. Properly dark when the track sits high and runs wide; the pleats can't hide a track that is too short.

The curtain runs on plastic rings along a metal pole and hangs below it, and light spills over the top, so in a bedroom an eyelet pair wants a curtain pocket above it. An eyelet curtain can't be motorized.

When a blind suits the bedroom better

A curtain darkens a large window best, because it can overlap the wall on every side. On a small window, in a deep recess or beside a bed with no room for a stack, a blind can be the better answer.

Roman

A roman blind

A flat panel of fabric that rises into even folds on a chain. In a blackout fabric it needs no lining, and it fits inside a recess at least 7 cm deep or on the wall above. From AED 180 per m², with the headrail, chain and fitting included and a 2.5 m² minimum. Light still shows at its edges, so it darkens a room rather than blacking it out. Faux wood

A faux wood blind

Slats that tilt to let morning light in at an angle and close for privacy, and wipe clean. From AED 210 per m², with the headrail, cords and fitting included. A slatted blind never makes a room dark, so in a bedroom it pairs with curtains in front. More on our wooden blinds page.

Vertical

On a bedroom's sliding door, blackout louvres draw aside to clear the opening. They cost from AED 110 per m², with the headrail, cord and chain and the fitting included. Light shows at the sides, so it makes the room dim enough to sleep in by day rather than dark. More on our vertical blinds page.

Master bedrooms
Usually the widest glass and the longest drop in the apartment, often floor to ceiling. A blackout pair with a sheer behind it on one double track, run past the frame on both sides, is what most of them get.
Children's rooms
A child goes to bed while it is still light on a summer evening. Blackout, with the bed away from the window wall, and in a child's room we fit any pull cord well out of reach. A bright print works as the face fabric; the lining behind does the darkening.
Nurseries
A nap at two in the afternoon needs the room properly dark at the brightest hour. A wave heading on a ceiling track, run wide, leaves no strip of light over the top for a baby to wake to.
Day sleepers
Anyone who sleeps by day, after a night shift or an early flight, needs every window in the room done, not only the big one, and a pair that overlaps at the centre so the air conditioning can't open a gap.
Guest bedrooms
A room used a few nights a month can take a dimout curtain, which cuts most of the light but still glows in the sun. The price depends on the fabric.
Rented apartments
Where the building has a curtain pocket above the window, the track fixes up inside it, out of sight, with the brackets in the pocket rather than across the wall. Check with the landlord before any drilling all the same.

Curtains that open at your alarm

Any pinch pleat or wave bedroom curtain can run on a motorized track, Somfy or Dooya, and a timer in the app can open it at the hour your alarm goes off, so the daylight does the waking, and a properly dark room is no longer hard to get up in.

A wired motor needs a power point inside the curtain pocket at the motor end, simplest to arrange before a ceiling is closed up; a battery motor needs no wiring. Track and motor prices are on our motorized curtains page.

What people ask before choosing bedroom curtains

How much do bedroom curtains cost in Dubai?

At Curtains Express they start at AED 45 per m² in blackout and AED 35 per m² in sheer, with the track and the fitting included. A 200 × 300 cm window in pinch pleat costs AED 540 for the blackout, or AED 960 with a sheer behind it on a double track, which is included too.

Should bedroom curtains be blackout?

For most bedrooms in Dubai, yes. The sun is up before half past five in June, and an east-facing room takes it straight in. A north-facing room you only sleep in after dark can manage with dimout, which takes out most of the light without going fully dark; anyone who sleeps by day needs blackout.

Can I have sheer and blackout curtains together?

Yes, and most bedrooms here do. The sheer hangs on the track nearest the glass and the blackout pair in front, both on one double track, which is included in the price. In a curtain pocket, two layers need 10 to 15 cm of depth for pinch pleat or 20 to 25 cm for a wave heading.

Should bedroom curtains touch the floor?

Nearly. A blackout pair finishes about 1 cm clear of the floor, close enough to stop light across the floor without dragging. A curtain that stops at the sill lets light out underneath it.

How far past the window should bedroom curtains go?

At least 15 to 20 cm past the frame on each side, with the track as high as the room allows, so the closed pair overlaps the wall rather than stopping at the edge of the glass. That overlap is most of what makes a bedroom dark.

What colour curtains are best for a bedroom?

Any colour can be blackout. The four-pass lining behind the face fabric does the darkening, so a white curtain blocks the light as well as a black one. Choose the face fabric for how the room should look; it makes no difference to how dark it gets.

Do blackout curtains keep a bedroom cool?

They help while the sun is on the window. Drawn across hot glass, a lined pair stops the sun reaching the bed and the floor, but a curtain shades more than it insulates. If heat is the main problem, a honeycomb blind traps still air against the glass and does more.

Are bedroom curtains soundproof?

No. A heavy lined pair softens echo in the room and takes the edge off noise from the street, but most noise comes in through the glass and the window frame, and no curtain stops that.

What curtains are best for a child's bedroom?

Blackout, because children go to bed while it is still light in summer, and a nap needs a dark room in the afternoon. Any print or colour works as the face fabric. Keep the bed away from the window wall; we fit any pull cord well out of reach.

Can you add blackout lining to my existing bedroom curtains?

Yes. We can sew the same four-pass silicone blackout lining onto the curtains you already have instead of making a new pair, and check the track at the same time, because the lining adds weight.

Curtains or blinds for a bedroom?

On a large window, curtains, because they overlap the wall and make the room darker. A blind suits a small window, a deep recess, or a wall with no room for a curtain to stack. Many bedrooms have both, with a blind in the recess and curtains in front.
